Ten Ways Schools Are Using Social Media Effectively

Meris Stansbury, from eSchool News, has posted a great article on the top ten ways that schools are making use of social media to enhance student learning, communicate with their communities, and build the school's capacity for success.  In her study, eSchool News readers were asked, “Name one way you use social networking in your school/district. Or, if you can’t/don’t currently use social networking, how would you like to?” The results are both interesting and useful for practicing school leaders.

The top ten are:

  1. Professional Development
  2. Community Outreach
  3. Course Assignments,
  4. Parent Communication
  5. Distance Learning
  6. Assessments
  7. Cross-Cultural Communication and Language Learning
  8. Collaborative Learning
  9. Networking With Colleagues
  10. Integrating Real World Applications into Teaching
For a full description of all of these great ideas, and a lot of tips from practicing school leaders, be sure to check out the entire article at http://www.eschoolnews.com/2011/10/21/ten-ways-schools-are-using-social-media-effectively/5/?.  It's a great way to spend some time during a personal learning break -- one of the hallmarks of effective leaders.

  1. Social media is a great medium for collaborative learning. Hoping more teachers wil quickly integrate and embrace it because it can be a powerful teaching tool.
